This is supervisory work responsible for overseeing assigned work crews engaged in the maintenance and construction of electric underground and overhead distribution sub-transmission, substation, and street lighting facilities. This includes related electrical equipment and utility & street right-of-way tree clearance.

Duties include coordinating and supervising a number of work crews, in a variety of construction, maintenance and repair operations.


  • Schedules, organizes and supervises multiple work crews for efficient construction, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground electric projects.
  • Assists in design and general planning of electric construction, maintenance, and repair operations.
  • Inspects projects while work is in progress; coordinates activities with lineworker-in-charge; provides advice, direction and assistance on difficult work problems.
  • Maintains detailed records of time, material and equipment used and of work accomplished; prepares reports, cost estimates and work orders; and assists with budget preparation.
  • Provide recommendations for improving work methods and procedures.
  • Coordinates service interruption schedules; maintain liaison with private utility and contractors regarding construction and repair schedules.
  • Conducts training in operation procedures and safety practices. Assists with instructing and training of apprentices and other new employees.
  • Assure all City safety rules, regulations and policies are followed.


  • Ability to access, input, process and retrieve information using computers and software including general purpose business applications and specialized electric utility planning, scheduling, and operations applications.
  • Ability to plan, schedule and coordinate the work of a number of crews in electric construction, repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instruction, and to read and interpret engineering plans, blue prints and diagrams.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records of time, materials and equipment and to prepare reports of work accomplished.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, working relationships with employees, representatives of private utility companies, customer and the public.


  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must have completed a recognized lineworker apprenticeship program
  • Must have a minimum of 6 years progressive relevant experience with an electric utility including operations, construction, maintenance, and repair programs.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan driver's license.
  • Extensive knowledge of approved methods, materials and tools used in electrical overhead and underground construction, maintenance and repair.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles of electrical theory, as applied to electrical circuits and wiring systems of an electric utility system. Ability to apply this knowledge to specific work problems.
